STREET & SCALE

A city with another rhythm

Streets, steps and parks reveal a rhythm distinct from cities in Asia: a way to read urban space through movement.

01

Looking up, looking across

Layered steps and vertical towers shift attention between close structure and distant silhouettes. Scale is a relationship with the body.

02

The street frames the view

In DUMBO, brick façades frame the Manhattan Bridge at the end of a street. Pedestrians, cars and windows give the large structure a human context. An entrance or corridor can create a similar relationship between foreground and distance.

03

Freedom benefits from structure

The city holds windows, people, bridges and towers within one experience. Spatial freedom also benefits from a legible structure: clear routes, useful open space and an understanding of different activities.
